Holiday traditions are really just beginning for our family. Our girls are young and we are getting into the groove of having two kids that walk and talk independently. I really want to instill memories and expectations when holidays come around. We have a tradition already of going to see Santa Clause in his little red house in Central Park in town. Zoe always cries and last December, Gigi had her chance to wail as well. It's great fun! We host Thanksgiving at our home for our small family of 10, sometimes 11 if my nephew has a girlfriend tagging along. We go all out and use "real" dishes, lots of antiques from our buffet cabinet arranged on the dining room table with a gorgeous brown turkey.
The 4th of July is a small affair at our house. We have a swimming pool now so our day will consist of swimming in the pool, lounging in the hammock, eating a fabulous blueberry pie and, in what I hope becomes our annual 4th of July tradition, having a clambake. Constructing a clambake in Central Illinois is no easy feat. We had to drive (twice) to Springfield just for the main ingredients...lobster, clams, mussels and shrimp. The girls are young and not really into eating things that come in hard shells and that used to live in the ocean with legs and googly eyes, but I am hoping over time, they will love our annual tradition of shellfish and fireworks.
Memories take time to make. I hope that my daughters will remember our holidays with smiles on their faces as they grow up...googly eyes and all.
